After a sluggish start to the Season Paul Nicholls is now looking like he has turned the corner after he enjoyed a fruitful week last week and is now once again looking like the trainer to watch in the next couple of weeks and months.
After Star Stable Jockey Ruby Walsh fell injuring himself a few weeks ago Deputy Sam Thomas was unable to bring any of Paul Nicholls horses home in 1st place and clearly lacked something which eventually returned in big fashion last Tuesday in the big rearranged race at Irish course Leopardstown.

The John Durkan Memorial Chase is a Grade 1 race that represented a big task for Thomas who was riding one of the fancied horses in Noland who was still a novice himself last season, but you would never have guessed it the way he jumped so confidently around the course and managed to take over the lead when The Listener made a mistake and blundered four out. Many fans in the stands thought the race was won but The Listener managed to rally once again when on the flat, but Thomas was not going to let this one slip through the net and held on to win the race by half a length and send home all the people that stood by him with a broad smile on their faces.
With so many big jump races coming up over the next few weeks and the imminent return of Star jockey Ruby Walsh I would recommend having each way tipples on whatever Sam Thomas rides because he now looks to have got over his early season troubles and could well reap rewards over the season.

Last year’s Grand National winner Comply or Die makes his 2nd performance of the season this week at Cheltenham, his 1st appearance was forgotten pretty quickly as he was pulled up by jockey Timmy Murphy when trailing way at the back of the race and did not really seem too bothered, but with in form trainer David Pipe now saying he is getting back to his best he will be one to watch very carefully over the next few months.
Another one of my favourite jump horses is Monet Garden and on Thursday (Dec 11th) he showed why, having looked beat on a few occasions he showed such courage in not giving in and won a frantic duel with another in form horse Snoopy Loopy in the Peterborough chase at Huntingdon. The 5-1 chance had who had disappointed in his last race in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree was always travelling well on this occasion under relatively unknown jockey Davy Condon and produced some fantastic leaps throughout the extended two-and-a-half-mile contest in which he just got up to win.

First run in 1875, in front of a crowd estimated to be in excess of 100,000, the race is staged every year at Kentucky’s Churchill Downs course on the first weekend in May.
The ‘Race for the Rose’, so called as the winning horse is draped with a blanket of 554 red roses shortly after crossing the line, owes its inception to Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Junior. In 1872 Clark attended some of the major races in Europe, which inspired him to organise a race to rival them. First he had to build facilities good enough to host such an event and organised the Louisville Jockey Club with the aim of raising money to do precisely that. Churchill Downs, named after John and Henry Churchill who had provided the land for the racetrack, was erected in time to open it’s doors in 1875 and they’ve never really looked back.
Originally raced over the same distance as the English Derby, one mile five furlongs, the distance was reduced to a mile and a quarter in 1896. The first ever Kentucky classic was won by a colt named Aristides trained by legendary handler Ansel Williamson. Amazingly that would be the former slave’s only victory in this prestigious event
It continues to attract crowds of over 100,000 and is described in the US as ‘the most exciting two minutes in sport.’
