The last two weeks of Horse racing in the UK have been hit hard by the freezing conditions that have hit the courses all the around the British Isles very hard with many top class meetings having to be abandoned due to parts of the track just simply not being up to the task of being able to stage races with sub zero temperatures sweeping the country which shows no signs of stopping.
The only jump meeting to survive the blizzard over the weekend was funnily enough in the beautiful Scottish city of Ayr where you would have thought it would have been at its coldest! One trainer who will be glad that the meeting went ahead will be Howard Johnson who celebrated his 50th winner of the season just before the turn of the New Year and carried on his stables good form here in Ayr, the best race of the day at Ayr was the one in which two horses gave a great account of themselves with both Johnson’s Prince De Beauchene and Bracken lad serving up a cracker to warm up the crowd on this very cold day.
Denis O Regan is a jockey that seems to have grown in the past 12 months and he was on top of Prince De Beauchene who edged out Bracken lad and with two fences to go pulled away to give favourite backers a nice victory with him coming home at a decent 13/8 price because quite frankly he was head and shoulders above everything else and really should have been odds on at least.
With Paul Nicholls horses already bang in form and now Mr Johnsons horses going that way I can see some great battles coming up over the next few months with Cheltenham being at the forefront of both their minds I am sure.
