After a sluggish start to the Season Paul Nicholls is now looking like he has turned the corner after he enjoyed a fruitful week last week and is now once again looking like the trainer to watch in the next couple of weeks and months.
After Star Stable Jockey Ruby Walsh fell injuring himself a few weeks ago Deputy Sam Thomas was unable to bring any of Paul Nicholls horses home in 1st place and clearly lacked something which eventually returned in big fashion last Tuesday in the big rearranged race at Irish course Leopardstown.
The John Durkan Memorial Chase is a Grade 1 race that represented a big task for Thomas who was riding one of the fancied horses in Noland who was still a novice himself last season, but you would never have guessed it the way he jumped so confidently around the course and managed to take over the lead when The Listener made a mistake and blundered four out. Many fans in the stands thought the race was won but The Listener managed to rally once again when on the flat, but Thomas was not going to let this one slip through the net and held on to win the race by half a length and send home all the people that stood by him with a broad smile on their faces.
With so many big jump races coming up over the next few weeks and the imminent return of Star jockey Ruby Walsh I would recommend having each way tipples on whatever Sam Thomas rides because he now looks to have got over his early season troubles and could well reap rewards over the season.
