Kentucky Derby History
Category: UK Sports
There has been hundreds of arguments with Horse racing enthusiasts for years over the Kentucky Derby, with fans from The UK arguing that the English Derby is the biggest flat race in the world of flat racing and the US fans all saying that it is the Kentucky Derby, one thing is for certain though and that is this will be is an argument that will never be settled one way or the other.
Last year’s winner Big Brown who I feel was retired far too early to stud was built for this race with his powerful change of gear that no other horse seemed to cope with and if you ask me could have gone on to dominate racing around the World for a number of years but now we will never know.
The race itself ‘The Kentucky Derby’ is a Grade I stakes race that is only allowed for three year-old thoroughbred horses. The race is held every year in the Southern State of Louisville Kentucky on the first Saturday in May and the race actually caps the massive two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The race is run over one and a quarter miles (2 km) at the picturesque Churchill Downs track which is one of the biggest racing stadiums in the World.
This race is one of them races that foreign trainers regularly try to do well in but due to the long hours travelling they have always suffered and will always do so in the future in my opinion. This year’s race will once again have the US race fans on tender hooks for the two minutes in which their hearts will be racing up and down and after the retirement of Big Brown I wonder which horse the US public will be talking about come May.
